Virtual Carry-On: Business Travel Tips & Tricks

Everybody knows that traveling can be stressful. Even when we take all the right precautions, things don’t always run exactly according to plan. Hey, it’s life!

Carry-on bags are one of the most crucial items we have when it comes to business travel. Whether traveling to a US city or overseas, whatever you’ve packed in your carry-on is all you’ve got for the duration of the flight – and if you’ve checked a bag, what’s in your carry-on is simply your lifeline. In the worst case scenario of the airline (temporarily!) losing your luggage, hopefully you have enough in your carry-on to see you through - clean underwear and toiletries are a must!

From necessities to not-so-necessary-but-totally-worthwhile, we’ve rounded up a list of some of the most important items to make room for in your carry-on come your next business trip. You may just feel the urge to make a few new purchases, too…

Battery Operated Charger There is simply nothing worse than watching your phone battery go into the red zone right before your very eyes.  Always have a phone charger in your carry-on, and make sure it’s working up to par. However, simply packing a plug-in charger isn’t always enough when you’re on the go. Make sure to also carry a charger that operates solely on batteries (like the iGo).  A phone needs to be able to be charged anywhere, anytime! Same goes for your laptop.

Copies of Travel Documents If you make a copy of all of your most important travel documents in advance (license, passport, etc) you can store them in a safe compartment in your bag forever. On the rare chance something were to go missing, having these copies would save you from a seriously stressful situation. Also, having hard copies of all flight, hotel and transportation information is always a good idea in case technology fails.

Travel-Sized Toiletries If your carry-on bag is your only bag for your business trip, you’ll want to make sure all liquid items comply with the airline restrictions. These items must follow the 3-1-1 rule: 3.4 ounces of liquid or less, 1 quart-sized clear plastic, zip-top bag, and 1 bag per person. Make sure to pack travel-sized items when it comes to toothpaste, deodorant, hair products, etc. A travel-sized bottle of antibacterial is always good to have on hand as well.

USB Memory Stick This is just about the most important thing a business traveler can have on them at all times. From last-minute edits to printing out extra hard copies of a presentation, a USB memory stick will allow you to do so at your hotel’s business center or a local Kinko’s. Try to find a version that can attach to your key chain so as not to accidentally lose or misplace it, which unfortunately happens too often.

Noise canceling earplugs Because it’s a rule that if you don’t have them, there will be a crying baby on your flight, and it will be too close for comfort. For a more relaxing air travel, earplugs are a must, especially if you’ve got a big business meeting or event that day. Let your flight be a peaceful one.

Incase Of Emergency Clothing Kit You’re drinking a cup of coffee on the plane, and in moments a bout of turbulence has left you with a unfortunate stain on your pants. Or perhaps the shirt you’ve planned to wear for your meeting later that day is now completely wrinkled from all those hours in the suitcase, and you’re short on time. A stain-stick pen and wrinkle releaser are two crucial items you should have on you for these in-case-of-emergency moments.
